six months ago a recommended plumber fitted a new shower cubicle in our bathroom after we had leaks coming through the ceiling with our old one. He had to dry out the floor and replace some of it and remove tiles from the lower wall and replaster and replace them. He worked hard and was on time and curtesy whilst here, the problem however was that we had further leaks with the new cubicle a few weeks after fitting. He returned and seemed to have rectified the issues. Unfortunately we have now got further leaks and we contacted the plumber expecting him to come out and sort the issue (cublcle now only 6 months old) and he informed us that he is no longer working as a plumber as of January 2017. Obviously this is a blow to us as we would have expected him to come back and fix it at cost or for free and he would have had the knowledge of exactly what he had fitted and work done. his invoice says in business 10 years and states work insured, so where do we go from here? Does he get to walk away completely from this problem? Any advice welcome, thanks

Re: how do i get my shower fixed?
Assuming he was a sole trader and not a limited company, he continues to be responsible for the substandard work.
If the leaks ocurred within the first six months, it is assumed the problem was there from the beginning.
If the problem showed itself after 6 months you will have to demonstrate it was due to substandard work at the time of installation.
This might take an independent report.

Re: how do i get my shower fixed?
It will depend on whether or not the current leaks are a recurrence of the previous problem.
There shouldn't be any problems as leaks within such a short time would a priori indicate unsatisfactory (not durable enough) work.
However if the leaks are due to the base splitting because mac washed his pet elephant in the shower.......

Re: how do i get my shower fixed?
his text recommends we find an alternative plumber now to sort it out, the original plumber obviously feels he can walk away from this issue. How would be best to proceed? Not sure if there is any legislation which would highlight his obligation to return and fix this leak, at the moment we are without a shower as it is coming through the ceiling and into the extractor fan for the hob below. any advice would be welcome.

Re: how do i get my shower fixed?
Originally when he put in the new fixtures and new flooring there were issues a few weeks after when there were leaks into the room below, apparently he hadn't tightened something up sufficiently to be watertight. He returned and put this right and we haven't had any issues since. However bathroom does smell a bit damp so am wondering if the wooden floor below the shower base is all wet through. I do feel a bit anxious about trying to force him back into our home to do the repair, will he make things worse?

Re: how do i get my shower fixed?
In that case, as he has instructed you to find another plumber to do the remedial work, tell him you will do so and will present him with the account..
Ensure you received an itemised bill for the work and then recover cost from first plumber, if necessary via the courts.
