  • Previous employer asking for car excess

    Hi

I left my organization on 31st of July 2016. My contractual notice period was 8 weeks but I given them some11 weeks notice, this was to ensure that I leave company in a goodwill. The company had held some of my payment till 31st August (one month after I left) to ensure that I am clear with all dues etc. However they have recently contacted me stating that during the first week of July I hired the company car (supplied by external supplier) and they found that the supplier has recently told them that the car had some minor damage and hence my previous employer seeking me to pay the excess charge against the insurance as the car was booked on my name. I told them firstly I couldn't recall this as it was some 7 months ago and my employment with the company finished at the end of July. but, they say that I am still liable to pay the excess.

Please can someone advice what I should do as I don't agree with the claim they are making and equally I have no contractual obligation with them. If there were any dues I owe they should have deducted from my final payment not like this recovering after 7 months.
