my son in law has got a new job offer and he has handed in his notice but they have refused and said he needs to give them a months notice, he gets paid weekly and does not have a contract,is this legal?

Unless his contract (and he has a contract even if he has not been given written terms and conditions) states otherwise he only has to give statutory notice of one week.
As he has not received written T&Cs his employers will have a problem enforcing their demands.
Others with more knowledge about employment matters should be along in due course with advice.
