  • Current account fraud

I received an email from my joiner suggesting he starts work soon and quite reasonably he asked for a deposit of £1400 to be paid into his bank account. I know him and it all looked fine except his computer was hacked and my money went into a Halifax account. I have informed Action Fraud - no action. I have informed the fraud department of my bank (First Direct) who have found out:
1.the Halifax account is in a personal name
2.the account holder has been contacted and if no response the account will be closed
3.the money was taken by an individual withdrawing the money in a branch on a debit card - 15 minutes after the transfer
    4. the name on the transfer did not match the account but that is not checked under the faster payment service
I have just complained (on-line) to Halifax that they surely cannot have followed their own anti-money laundering/KYC rules
My fear is that Halifax will just close the account, claim data protection rules prohibit disclosure of info on the thief and walk away.
Any ideas on how I should build a case for compensation?
