  • OC did not report default but Lowell have?

Hi all. I am currently paying off a shop direct debt to Lowell. SD did not report the default originally. Now when I look at my file it shows a default to Lowell. It looks roughly the correct date for default (Jan 2012) but can Lowell report this? I thought they could only make changes to original report if there was one.
    Thanks in advance.

If a debt is sold to a debt collector, then the new creditor should use the same default date as the original creditor did.

Thanks. So even if the original account and default was not on my credit file at all, Lowell can start reporting it because they now own the debt? Seems unfair when you make an effort to pay a debt and SD didn't report it to any agencies. 😔

It is purely a commercial decision for the original creditor or a 'new owner' (assignee) whether to report it to a CRA or not.

Okay thanks. Looks like I'm just going to have to sit it out for 15 months then. Thanks for confirming.
