My hubby & I found ourselves having to look after our 2 baby Grandsons for a whole year. The youngest at 6 was taken ill and had a subdural hematoma and our son was accused of causing it by non accidental injury. We had the most traumatic year of our lives.
When it started the social worker mentioned the words kinship. I proceeded to search the internet for as much information as I could and found the details of a charity Kinship Carers UK I contacted them. They came to our home and listened to us and then gave us valuable advice, but most of all they offered us support we realised we were not on our own, we were able to phone the support line just to get it off our chest, have a moan, have a cry they also provide a support group for kinship carers so going along I realised that we weren't on our own. There are kinship carers who have the full responsibility of parenting kinship children, the majority of them being grandparents.
We fortunately had a happy ending to our case, our son was exonerated and the children were returned to him & his partner, however the double edge is that the baby has a condition, Elhers Danlos Syndrome but he is doing extremely well. The process as far as children's services and the family courts are concerned is another story for another time.
If you are a kinship carer and feel that you could do with someone to talk to they have a website with their details http://www.kinshipcarersuk.com/ I can highly recommend them.
