  • Tax code question

I've received a tax code letter from youknowwho. The first page says that they will also send the employer a tax code notice. How long have they been sending the employer a tax code notice, or is it something new?

Basically--for ever---its the only way that the employer will know how to deduct tax due on your earnings

So they know automatically then? I'm asking as in previous recent years I had two more jobs at the same time and they're reclaiming the tax from me that was underpaid. If they already knew that I had those other jobs aswell, shouldn't they have taxed me accordingly at the time rather than leaving it for years and then trying to get it out of me all at once??

When you had more than one job, did you tell your employers that you had other employment?
If not each employer would have given you the standard tax allowance, which would mean you underpaid tax and HMRC have just found out and want that underpaid tax.
