Could someone please advise.... ASAP...REALLY URGENT - (MEETING HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW!) Please Help

My partner works for a small company with no HR dept. or Union. He has raised a grievance at work and they have employed a temporary HR Consultant to handle it.
Apparently this person will be impartial. However, they have told him that the only companion he is allowed would be a work colleague or Union Rep.
As the company has only 5 people employed (3 of which are family, 1 of which is included in the grievance and the other whom he does not wish to reveal personal things to, as he may have to still work with him),
and he does not wish to join a union.......why can he not have a companion with him? - This person would also be impartial, would not be there as an advisor but just as a companion who also has knowledge of HR Procedures.

I have been told that it is discretionary by the company, but they have refused?

Can you please tell me where he stands?

    Many Thanks

    Re: Grievance Meeting

I afraid that the employer is correct, only work colleague or union rep. unless the employer permits otherwise.
