  • British Gas continues to Harris customers

Hello I have fallen victim to their harassment. I live in a 2 bedroomed apartment l moved in September 2012 I received a bill in march 2013 for £670 I was shocked... I questioned it and they agreed my bill was only £246. I agreed to pay monthly and a £10 per month payment plan was set up. A year later BY wants me to pay £180 each month they now say I owe £920. BY state l am using 26 units a day. In fact I am using a fraction of that. I do not have the money to pay

Assemble a detailed chronology and make a formal complaint to BG.

Only deal with them in writing - a paper trail is essential.
Write every letter on the assumption that a judge who knows nothing will be reading it later.

Ask for the dates on which they actually read the meter.
Ask for a written explanation of how you came to be billed for £670, and why when challenged, this became £246.

Check that the meter is recording the correct units (ie metres, rather than yards), as this has been a problem in the past.
Are you absolutely sure that the meter is exclusive to your flat?
Take meter readings regularly. Time stamped photographs of the dials might be useful.

BG are not a particularly pleasant organisation to deal with, so you would be wise to seize the initiative.

Is the flat one of many in one building? I ask, because its not uncommon for landlords to have just one meter for all flats in a building, even if it is illegal.
