Please advise where my post is best suited..

Last year my property (clothing) was damaged by a defect fixing attached to a fence for roadworks. A sharp corner of metal was bent out of shape and ripped a brand new leather jacket of mine costing nearly 500 euros. These particular roadworks closed the road off and the fence surrounding the works came right up the pavement. This was on a busy street in London, restaurants with tables and chairs outside meant I had to squeeze past people to get through.

Last year (around August) I sent various e-mails to the contractor, Laing O'Rourke, (including photos of the defected metal fixing, the small space I had to walk along and the damage to the jacket) and even passed on information of a local business owner who witnessed the incident. I dealt with a few different people who helped me to a point then when I chased them for answers had no reply. They even took a statement from the witness and asked for proof of value of the jacket, which I provided.

I chased and chased them via e-mail until I gave up in December last year. Now I have a ruined jacket and every time I look at I get angry, this damage was no fault of my own.

I know it's been a while since the incident, but I need to take the next step to try and get some compensation. Perhaps threaten legal action in a way that will make them want to settle? Send something directly via post?
