Hi there
I was wondering if anyone could help me. I bought a property in May 2011 and contacted the council to explain that i would not be living there immediately. I was told that due to the fact that the previous occupier had received a 6-month exemption (C) of their council tax as they were not living there i would have to wait 6 weeks until i could then get this. I said this was fine and paid the appropriate amount for this. Then i received an exemption from 1st July for 6 months as it was unfurnished and vacant.
I then proceeded to move in in January and have been paying normal charges since. However, i have recently been contacted saying that a mistake was made and i was never entitled to the exemption due to the fact that the residence needs to have been lived in for at least 6 weeks before a class C exemption can be re-issued.
Now i am meant to pay over £600 for a mistake that they made.
Can anyone give me any advice on what to do as i feel that this is totally wrong and now i am being penalised for someone's mistake.
