    Hello folks

    I'm new to this and need some help with a claim from HMRC for alleged underpaid tax from 2005 can someone point me in the right direction please

    I don't think there's a specific tax area. I'd post a thread in here. Site team will move it if there's a better place for it to go. :beagle:

      I'm no expert on this by any means but I thought there was no duty to hold tax records or data after 6 years? Hopefully more experieinced members will no more on this shortly.

        Hi and welcome to you, Cheshire Lass. As Jane says, there is usually a 6-year limitation on such affairs. However, I believe it is possible that a business can organise its accounting period such that - for example - earnings in the year up to 07/04/05 are not taxable until the next Tax Return is due. So, they are not declared until a year later, and this may give HMRC the right to pursue any tax due until the end of the sixth year following the final date that the relevant Tax return needed to be submitted.

        ....or summat like that. I'm self-employed, but it still confuses me. If this is a PAYE claim, then that's different, I believe.
