Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some advice about a civil recovery letter from DWF.
About a month ago, I was stopped at Sainsbury's after using the self-checkout. I genuinely forgot to scan one sushi item and a carrier bag, worth around £8 in total.
The store recovered everything immediately. The DWF letter states that the goods were recovered and the value of the loss is £0, but they are claiming £200 for security/civil recovery costs.
Today I received a third letter, saying that if I don't pay within 14 days, they may start court proceedings.
My questions are:
I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences. Thanks!

My questions are:
- Has anyone received similar DWF letters from Sainsbury's?
- Do they actually take these cases to the County Court?
- If they do issue a claim, would I have the chance to file a defence explaining that the goods were recovered, the store suffered no direct loss, and the £200 is only for security costs?
- Would ignoring these letters affect my credit record, or would that only happen if I lost a CCJ and failed to pay it?
I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences. Thanks!
