    Hi Anne Newman

    Welcome to LB

Thank them for their letter, explain that the damage they allege wasn't caused by you.
Give them reasons why that is the case.

It my be an idea to change your 'user' name.

This is the Travelodge current T&C [August 2025]:

"Smoking, including the use of electronic cigarettes and vapes, is not permitted in any Travelodge hotel other than in designated smoking areas outside the hotel. You must not smoke in any of our hotels, either in the hotel rooms or public areas, or interfere with our fire detection system or with any emergency equipment. If you do so we may terminate your booking and reserve our rights to take any further action. We may either (at our sole discretion) request the immediate re-payment of our reasonable costs during your stay, charge the payment card details provided at the time of booking or instruct a third party to contact you after your stay to recover our reasonable costs. The reasonable costs we incur if you smoke in our hotel are likely to include costs for specialist cleaning, repair or replacement of damage by you to our property, the cost of the room for any period it is unusable and our administration expenses. If you request it we will send a breakdown of these costs to the address used for the booking."

Tell them you didn't smoke and they may wrongly have mistaken the contents of the disposable ashtray that you emptied as smoking in the room. Nothing in the T&C says you can't empty a disposable ashtray. It's only the act of smoking itself that is prohibited.

EXC I've been identified as spam again after my post appeared twice and I edited it then it disappeared for mod approval! Spam filter doesn't seem to like me today.

I have just returned from a stay in a hotel where there were prominent notices that signs of smoking would incur a significant additional charge.

The OP will need to prove that she did not smoke in the room if she is to succeed in a claim. She should also think about where she disposes of the evidence of her habit.
