  • Changes to works pension

My daughter's employer has given one year notice informing that the existing pension scheme will stop and another will be substituted.

    Is this legal?

    Yes.

There are certain procedures they need to follow but in principle can employer can reduce the benefits provided by the pension scheme.

And very many, probably most, employers have done this. In practice the millions of employees whose pension benefits have been reduced or replaced have no realistic option other than to accept it.

    Is there a union there?
All opinions expressed are based on my personal experience. I am not a lawyer and do not hold any legal qualifications.

There is a union and they will be involved.

The intention is to cease one pension scheme and substitute another. Those affected are a group who up until now have accepted lower salaries in return for enhanced pension benefits. Going onto a different contract will not only affect their pensions but also such things as annual leave.

      Thank you for your response.
