Hi everyone,
A few weeks ago, I visited Primark just to browse. At the time, I was already carrying four shopping bags from earlier purchases, so I didn’t buy anything at Primark. I did try on a few items and then left the store. As I exited, I was suddenly stopped by a few staff members who accused me of shoplifting. I was completely shocked and had no idea what they were talking about.
To my surprise, 2–3 small items (makeup products) were found near me, but I genuinely didn’t know how they ended up there. I denied everything because I would never steal – it’s completely against my values. Then they pulled out an invoice showing £285 worth of items and acted as if all of that was associated with me. But the truth is, only a couple of small items were anywhere near me. They made it seem like the entire £285 worth of goods were mine, which is absolutely false.
They then took me into a back office and started threatening me, saying they would call the police if I didn’t cooperate. As a young, scared student, I didn’t know what to do. Out of fear, I complied with everything they asked. They quickly took down all my personal details in under 10 minutes, told me I’d just have to pay a fine when the letter comes, and then made me sit for around 45 minutes with no explanation before finally letting me go.
Fast forward to now — I’ve received an RLP (Retail Loss Prevention) letter demanding £375. I’m a student, currently unemployed, and I honestly don’t know what to do. I’ve read on forums that these RLP letters are civil demands and not criminal charges, and some people recommend ignoring them. But I’m still extremely anxious — can they actually take me to court? Will this affect my student visa or immigration status? I truly feel like I’ve been framed and taken advantage of because I was too scared to stand up for myself at the time.
Any advice or experience would mean a lot. I’m really scared and just want to know what steps I should take next.
TL;DR:
Went to Primark, didn’t buy anything. Was stopped and accused of shoplifting. Only 2–3 small items found near me, but staff blamed me for £285 worth of goods. Out of fear, I gave my info. Now got an RLP letter for £375. I’m an unemployed international student — worried about court or visa impact. Need advice. Please help.
