  • Shoplifting M&S

    Hello
Unsure if I should start my own thread but my situation is very similar to LouisaFort in that I was caught shoplifting in M&S almost 4 weeks ago. I walked out with trolley containing mostly food items and a couple of home items, totalling apx £140. The security guard stopped me outside the store and took me into an office where I gave him my personal details and he said he was recording our discussion. I apologised as have money and could pay for the items but in my panic didn’t offer to do so. Police weren’t involved and he said I was banned from the store for 2 years, and would receive a letter from M&S as systems were down. I still haven’t received anything at all and am so anxious that every time I hear a car or there’s a knock on the door I think it’s the police. Whilst again no excuse for my behaviour, I’ve been very unwell for sometime with severe depression and taking medication for 8 months. I have been a customer of M&S for over 40 years and have their credit card spending an average of over £3500 per year. I don’t know what came over me and have never been involved with the police.

i am so embarrassed and sick with worry and hoping that someone can advise if this long wait has happened before and if I should make contact either with the police or M&S.

Thank you for any help or advice

Ladylexie it is very unlikely that the police are going to show up at your house after 4 weeks, particularly as they were not called at the time. It is impossible for us to guarantee whether M&S will decide to pursue but in our experience it is highly unlikely you will ever be contacted by the police. If you are then come back here for advice.

Do not make contact with either the police or M&S.

If you do get some speculative invoice then our general advice is to ignore, particularly if the goods were taken back by the store. However, come back to this thread if you do get any.

In the meantime maybe consider another visit to your GP and although this may be difficult, try to find activities that can take your mind off worrying about this incident.

I do not provide advice by PM although I may on occasion ask you to send me documents this way but any related advice will be provided back on your thread.

I do my best to provide good practical advice, however I do so without liability.
If you have any doubts then do please seek professional legal advice.

Thank you for your helpful reply, I have been back to GP and have various appointments over the coming weeks to support with mental health.
