  • Retail Loss Prevention

    Was apprehended in a store for shoplifting and dealt with by police. However, RLP are trying to recover staff costs of £175 for observing, apprehending, interviewing and undertaking all necessary internal and external procedures thereafter. The store recovered all goods. I feel this is excessive. I am vulnerable with medical conditions and cannot pay that much. I would pay for staff wages for the hour that they were with me but surely its not £175. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

    Ignore RLP. They have no powers and you do not owe them the money they are demanding.

      What they have sent is a 'speculative invoice', it bears no reflection on any actual costs, as the costs they are claiming for from you are accounted for in their 'business model'.
      They lost no stock. If you are struggling, there is help out there.

        They are saying the costs are calculated from staff costs, during and after. I have read up on the Oxford case, but am still unsure if they can claim for staff hours used in observing, apprehending, interviewing and undertaking all necessary internal and external procedures thereafter”. Are these costs different from everyday business costs? Would I owe them the hourly rate for the staff or can ignore entirely?

          The point is, from the Oxford case, that the store is paying those staff anyway even if no-one stole anything. So the store has not incurred any EXTRA staff costs as a direct result of your shoplifting.
