Hi there, my husband and I were sold an interest only mortgage as we were on benefits and had no income. This was because he had a severe car crash in 2004 leaving him with permanent brain damage. At the time we received an insurance payout to do with the car crash of £100000 so took out the mortgage for the remaining £100,000. I believe we were advised that if/when my husband was able to return to work we would be able to change onto a repayment mortgage. However 19 years later things haven’t changed and if anything they are worse. I am now severely disabled and will never be able to return to work. My husband never returned to full time work and w have lived separately since 2017. The term is up in 6 years so I need to know what my options are for remortgaging as I have 6 children and my youngest 3 have special needs. The mortgage lender advised me to “ just put some money away each month “ when I made them aware of my situation.
