Hi all,
Hoping someone can advise me on a very strange issue. My wife and I have just had our driveway and patio replaced by a reputable local company. Said company quoted 2 weeks for completion and a price which we agreed. Just before the start of the work, we added an additional item to the job which increased the price, again, this was agreed upfront.
The job started on 24th July, work has progressed very quickly and we estimate that the crew took around 4-4.5 days in total (spread over the quoted 2 weeks) to get to the point the job is at now, which is about 90% finished (in our opinion). Both drive and patio are laid, there are just some very minor 'snagging'/cosmetic type activities to complete. However, this is where things get a little strange.
We agreed with the company at the beginning that no deposit was needed and we would pay 50% on completion and 50% at the end of October. Since the last workman left site on Thursday 3rd August, we have neither seen nor heard from anyone at the company. This is despite both of us having called, texted and emailed them repeatedly over the last few days.
Their advertisement board is still outside and there are still leftover materials lying around, so we assuming (hoping!) they will return *at some point*.
What i'd like to know is, since we haven't received official notice of the completion of the job, where do we stand legally with this? No money has changed hands and in fact, we have asked twice now for bank details to facilitate a transfer (when we're happy with the work of course) - I sent the most recent email this morning.
I appreciate this is not your run-of-the-mill situation, given we haven't paid a single penny for this job at the present time. That being said, we don't want to be seen as withholding money or not paying for any reason - we simply want to get the job finished so we can get on and enjoy our new driveway and patio.....
Any advice anyone can give would be very much appreciated at this point.
Many thanks,
Simon
