  • Unfairly treated by old employers

I’ve worked for a local plumbing firm before a new start At another company.. I had no vehicle so the owner of the company lent me the run around car. On receiving what I thought was a charitable gesture I asked if the car was in good working order. The response to the question was “ yes we’ve just had it serviced and it’s in full working order”
I worked for three weeks using the car only once privately on round trip of 18 miles to see my mum and the car suffered a catastrophic engine failure due to the fact it had been running with no oil for quite sometime.. again I had only been using this vehicle for only three weeks and in this time no engine light came on to warn me of the impending failure … I was also told the key battery had been changed and it hadn’t so nearly missed a days work as well..
I have left this company and have now been at my latest location for nearly 4 months and I’ve now received a bill for 2400 for the car that was written off due to poor maintenance apparently on my part… p.s I also had to pay my own insurance and petrol for the three week duration of employment…
Should I pay the price of the car?

    Do you think you should?

If you can back up what you say, surely the answer is no.

      Most unlikely!
An internal combustion engine will run (very badly) for a maximum of 30 minutes (usually much less) without oil.

Did you not check the oil level at all during those three weeks?

Is it not the law , that it is the drivers responsibility, to ensure that the vehicle is in a roadworthy condition before driving off: Lights, tyres, water, oil.
