Can I ask for a donated item back?

Hiya,
Long story short: a few years ago I 'donated' (more like long term loaned) an expensive piece of theatre equipment to a local theatre that operates as a charity. No documentation of the donation was made, and my company logo is still on the item so it's still technically my company's. At the time I was running a group for the theatre, so said they could have the equipment for their shows too, and then that sort of ended up with it staying here and now I'm not sure if I can legally ask for it back?

Due to circumstances beyond my control (i.e. someone spreading rumours about me when I wasn't even in the country) the council aren't 100% open to conversations with me. I want to know where I stand legally before I speak to them.

If it was a gift, it is no longer yours. If a loan, you may request its return.
