If you replace a 40 year old gas central heating boiler with modern boiler are you legally required to update the whole system to current regulations ?

I believe that if you replace a new boiler then you are required to adhere to current standards set out in Approved Document J. It does depend on what you mean by the whole system because I would take that to include all central heating pipework which I don't think is the case but you would need to check the approved document for confirmation.

Obviously if your boiler is 40 years old, then your piping may also be old and be lead pipes instead of copper pipes which you may want to consider replacing if that is the case. Gas engineer should confirm that though but do check yourself as they may say yes intentionally for extra unnecessary work.

My sons company when replacing a boiler upgrade the system to current regs and carry out a power flush nothing less consult your chosen engineer for advice on what they will do
