  • Leasehold and freehold title

    Hi everyone,

A house that I inherited has been transferred into my name. The original mortgage on the property was taken with Woolwich building society in 1976. The mortgage was fully paid off.

The freehold was purchased in 1996.

I have just received the titles in my name and there is still a mortgage charge from Barclays Bank. I know they took over the Woolwich building society but the charge is only shown on the leasehold title.

Why would a mortgage charge only be shown on the leasehold title and not the freehold title?

They are different properties. I sassume that it was not cleared as it should have been when the mortgage was 'fully paid off'
I always distrusted purchases of freeholds by leaseholders. They leave a permanently complicated series of question.
The real answer will emerge from an investigation of what happened wehen the freehold was acquired.
    Good luck.
