  • Vehicle sold with incorrect mileage (clocking)

    Hi,
I bought a van 28/02/2022 with the intention of getting it converted to a campervan. The mileage advertised was 34,800 and this mileage appears on the purchase invoice. A couple of days ago the vehicle developed a fault so I took it to a garage. The garage investigated the fault and during the process discovered that the mileage recorded by the on-board computer (ECU) showed 53,500 miles (85,600 kms) as of 04/07/2022. The mileage on the odometer is showing 38,500 miles so has covered 15,000 miles more than the odometer reading. This raises 2 issues for me, the first being that the vehicle was sold to me as a low mileage vehicle at 34,800 miles. Secondly, it was sold with a full service history, but of course it has actually missed a service. The dealer, a rather large one based in Leeds would seem to be in breach of contract. I would like some advice on the best way to approach them, and be properly armed with my rights before contacting them. Having a vehicle with a higher mileage (which I now have to correct) and an incomplete service history means I have overpaid for this vehicle. Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Thank you.

The dfifference in mileage is teal but not that substantial. A campervan might be expected to do several times more than
The dealer has, from memory, a simple duty to sell it with the correct mileage. They should be so embarassed by the difference to try to reach an amicable agreement.

If they don't take it to trading standards.

That is nearly a 40% reduction in actual mileage!

I doubt a reputable dealer would clock a vehicle now a days as it is a criminal offence to knowingly sell such a vehicle.

This is probably a case of innocent misrepresentation, and as advised already your best approach is to the dealer and seek a reduction in the price already paid, and perhaps a free service for the one missed.
Campervans depreciate more slowly than cars, so the price paid wouldn't probably be much less than you actually paid, but I doubt the dealer would want to defend a civil claim for misrepresentation so go discuss!
      Good luck
