My wife and I have shared a single email account for decades without any issue. We both receive all emails posted to this account automatically, which is very convenient.
Recently, with my consent, this email was shared by an acquaintance with a 3rd person for the purpose of contacting me about some social events. Perhaps naively, I did not anticipate that this might include confidential information. The 3rd person correctly assumed that this email could be used to contact me, but was not explicitly informed that it would contact my wife as well. After some months of regular communication the 3rd person sent an email with information that both he, and I feel should have been confidential between us.This was duly read by my wife. He claims this was a breach of implied confidentiality, and that I have, albeit passively, shared information intended only for me.
I feel that this is somehow nonsense, but I can also sympathise with his perspective and feel somehow guilty that he was not made aware that this was a shared email. But am I really guilty for the resulting damage?
