  • House ownership dispute

My current girlfriend did a silly thing around 30 years ago. She took out a mortgage on a house in Nottingham, and her current boyfriend at the time moved in and agreed to pay her half the mortgage in cash each month. After around a year he persuaded her to put his name on the deeds as co owner. Barclays (mortgage company) allowed her to do this, and created the paperwork. After roughly a further year, they split up, and the boyfriend contributed no more towards the mortgage. Now 30 years on my girlfriend is considering selling her house. She has contacted the ex boyfriend, and he has said 'fine. just pay off the mortgage (currently only circa £10k) and send me my half of the equity' She has paid the mortgage and maintained the house on her own for the last 30 years.

Does anyone know her legal rights with this ex boyfriend? She always believed that he would accept a pay off circa £20k to take his name off the deeds, but it seems that he now has greedier ideas. Current equity would be roughly £240k.

She may have to go to court for rulings about her proper share of the equity.

I strongly recommend consulting a good solicitor to work out a strategy: there is something over £100k at stake here.
