  • Is there a set way of dealing with people who you think are shoplifting?

Would it be possible to never approach the person to tell them what the problem is. Never have anything on camera of the theft or goods in their possession?
But claim they are after they left the store?

It may help if you explain the issue in more detail, including the nature of what you refer to as "the problem".
Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

Litigants in Person should download and read the Judiciary's handbook for litigants in person: https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/..._in_Person.pdf

The "problem" I mean is that they think they've seen you put shop property in your bag with no intention of paying for it, "shoplifting".
Like a few stories on here where people have been stopped and accused in store, embarrassing but you have the opportunity to prove shop staff have made a mistake.
Does the shop need to approach you to find out for sure? Do they need cctv? Or let you leave without stopping you, then share your information to other shops that you are a shoplifter with just other staff blindly backing up that first staff member opinion.

I'm just wondering if there is a guideline for stores to follow.
