Is it worth contacting the business and making an offer of payment to them? (To close it completely)

The police invite thousands of people in for voluntary interviews all the time, you just need to explain what happened, remember you won't be alone (solicitor will be there).

I spoke to my solicitor this morning he asked me to ring the police and get the name and badge number of the officer who called me.

I rang the police on 101 and the guy checked my record and nothing came up. No record of the incident yet. So I have no idea who called me.

Your solicitor will probably advise you to only answer the questions posed by the police.
Generally it is better not to volunteer information as it only gives reason for more questions which might lead to your confusion.

It is for the store/police to prove your guilt, not for you to prove your innocence.
Saying less is often the better way forward.

PS remember there is nothing "off the record"
Even after the interview has finished do not discuss the matter with the police, no matter how friendly they are

Ok thanks. I have called the police force today (my solicotor wants to find out as much information as possible and I don't have the name and badge number for the police officer who called me) and there is absolutely nothing on the police file for this incident.

Is this normal? I've never had an incident in my life for anything...so confused.

you could try 101 again as it takes time for records to be updated, but if no joy there visit the station from where the call originated/ where you have an appointment for the interview, and get the info from the desk operative

I called 101, went through to the constabulary the officer was from, he said he'd call me to set up an interview, but I would've expected at least something on on the file.

                  It will sort
Obviously they are in no hurry, so probably don't rate it as important.

It is easy to make an accusation, it is more difficult to prove, so don't get too stressed over this incident

                    You won’t believe it.

I was incredibly anxious, I’ve never had a criminal record in my life. Never even spoken to the police.

I called the police still no details on the file about the incident.

ironically had to collect something from the store in question today. I went in and asked to speak to the head of security to see whether I could get anymore details about the incident. He took my details of dates etc. He came back, said that I hadn’t paid for an item when going through self service, and then returned it a few days later. He said it was an easy mistake to make, he said if I can pay for the item now he’ll close it and tell the police to close the case.

Paid. Solicitor said after that even if police wanted to carry on they’d have nothing to stand by.

thanks to all for their advice feeling a massive relief today.
