  • Garage/ shed for large mobility scooter.

Hi, I live in a futures housing group house in Derbyshire. I have recently had to start using a large mobility scooter as I am in chronic pain every day. I suffer from arthritis of the spine, sciatica and I have degenerative discs. I've had to get a large mobility scooter for comfort. I recently asked the council if I can build a shed on my driveway to house the scooter and I was denied permission. I am having to keep the scooter in the house and the only place for it is in my living room. I live in the end house and there is a little jitty leading to my back garden but it's too narrow for the scooter to get through, which means I can't keep the scooter in the back garden. The driveway is outside my front door and I have 2 parking bays, beside the driveway is nothing but a couple of trees. So it's not like the shed would take up loads of room and it also wouldn't be an eyesore or block anyone else from getting anywhere as there is a large wall and no public access. Is there anything I can do to get this overturned as I need the scooter and I can't keep living with it in the house in front of my tv. I would appreciate any help or advice. Thank you in advance.

    Hi DEBRA MC

You should Appeal the Council's decision, remind them that they need to adhere to the Disability Discrimination Act and Health and Safety Regulations. By having to make you park your Mobility Scooter in your house, I believe that is a safety hazard, If there was a fire, that could potentially get in your way of escaping the premises. Especially as there is nowhere else for you to park it. Then the Council are putting you in danger by their actions.

I always suggest contacting your local councillor and/or M.P. They are there to help you.
