  • Anglian water, old default

Hoping someone can advise, I have just looked at my credit file to see that Anglian water have submitted 6 default accounts on my record for one bill. I have lived in my address for 11 years and only ever had one account with AW but they have registered multiple accounts and defaults on my file. Is this legal to do this and how do I go about removing them. They are all settled accounts and I am 400 in credit with AW.

In the first instance you should write to them asking for an explaination.

It might be an idea to send them a SAR, they will provide you with all the data they hold in your name / address for the last 6 years, they have 30 days to respond. Email it to their Data Protection Team. Once you have that information then write to them.

So this is the response I received

I have reviewed the reporting on your account and multiple lines are showing on your report as a Default has been recorded against you previously.

We first begin reporting all our customers under a ‘current record’ but if we then register a Default the balance is transferred from the ‘current record’. This then creates the Default record and closes the existing current record and a new current record will be created for future bills. Seeing multiple entries in this case would be correct.

This is as per the Water Industry Guidance when a balance is transferred to default, a new default record is created for an unpaid balance that is overdue by 90 days or more. When a balance transfers to default it will close the existing record and a new record will be created for future bills. This is different to other lenders and utilities, as Water companies will continue to provide a service after an account has been registered in default.

I can confirm you only have one active record being reported going forward and as the older records age they will gradually drop off your report.

are they allowed to do this?

Email the Credit Agency find out if that is the case and why they are allowed to do that.

I've come across an old document (2012), go through it, might shed some light -

Thanks, this is a super interesting document. Nowhere does it state that they create a new account once a Default has occurred

The Consumer Council for Water might provide advice / help - https://www.ccwater.org.uk/households/

Ive just discovered this on my report today. The stange thing is they're not new accounts. They have a different account number but the same opening date and amount owing yet the defaulted one says settled in other versions of the account. This is on 3 accounts. Theres about 15 Anglian Water records in total and only 3 opening dates between them

scottiehoff ... what was the outcome of this? I have an identical situation with Anglian Water and they are singularly unhelpful and couldn't care less.
