  • Caught shoplifting and store ban, scared for the police

Today I got caught shoplifting at a supermarket. The security guard approached me and told me to empty my bag, retrieved the receipt fromt the self checkout machine and that is how I was caught. I was given a written notice of ban from the store and any of the branches, but the police was not contacted.

I feel extremely guilty for this and know that I will never ever do this again. The thing though is that I have been repeatedly shoplifting at the store and know that if they check the CCTV, they will see that.
The reason I have been shoplifting is because I am a student and do not want to burden my parents any more than I do now, and also because I have an eating disorder where I feel compelled to binge etc.

I am really really scared now that the supermarket will check their past CCTV footage, see that I have shoplifted there multiple times and escalate the situation to the police so that I get a criminal record.

Can someone please tell me or advise me on what will happen? I am extremely sorry about what I have done and learned my lesson, and will never do anything like this again.

Any advice would be very much appreaciated

They will not scan back over CCTV, it is very time consuming and hence expensive.

Don't do it again and ignore any letters you get asking for a payment to meet their losses.

      Thank you for your response.

Do you think it is unlikely that they will escalate the situation?

I am just very scared and anxious about this, and am worried about what will happen.
