  • Double glazing glass pane cracks 13 months after installation

I had double glazed windows installed in my garage in December 2019. One internal pane has now cracked, of its own accord. The warranty from the windows company is for 10 years but states that it does not cover 'breaking glass'. Clearly, if I threw a hammer at the window I woudl not expect to be covered. But a window pane craking by itself suggests faulty installation. A quick trawl of the internet suggests either rapid thermal expansion or 'too tight packing' upon installation. I would lean towards the latter as Windows all over the country would be cracking all the time if the weather and temperature were to blame.I emailed the company two days ago but have had no reply. Perhaps the company in in hibernation due to the Covid crisis. Perhaps they simply don't want annoying customers like yours truly irritating them about poor installation (which I am not actually able to prove). They've got their money and have not proved overly zealous in keeping this customer happy. What are my rights on this issue? What should I do? Just pay money for a replacement double glazed unit or stand up for my consumer rights?

My first stop would be to the local double glazing firm to see how much replacement glass would cost, as they are easy enough to install in existing unit.

Depending on size you might find it a lot less stressful than trying to argue faulty installation which you admit you can't prove

That would be my way of thinking.

Hi ther. Thakks for the reply. Thart seems to be the state of things right now. They are saying that it was tenants who impacted the window. The tenants are saying that they just found the window vbroken. I would tend to believe the latter. No windows installer is going to admit to fautly installation, are they? And I can't prove it. Easier just to pay the money and be done with it. Thanks again.
