Voluntary termination

Hi please could I have some advice, my ex partner and I purchased a tourer caravan he paid a large deposit I took finance out everything was in my name , we separated and hes took the caravan and I cannot afford the payments and wanted to do a voluntary termination but finance company said I cannot do this as I'm not in possession of the caravan , the ex wont give it back or pay the finance I'm now at a loss of what too do , the police say it's a civil matter a solicitor has said the same and want to charge me extortionate amounts of money just to basically threaten my ex with a letter , any help would be appreciated at my wits end here thankyou
