Hi. So this is a first for me but I'm looking for some advice. I've recently received 2 letters stating I owe over £2000. I take full responsible for this CT debt from a couple of years ago when myself and partner was out of work. I'm currently not in a position to pay anywhere close to this amount ( they've stated they want payment in full or I will go to jail) I honestly can't remember getting a knock on my door from any balliffs. Also I'm currently on a DMP but my CT debt is separate. I have made a few payments to them earlier this year (before covid) of £147 a month but I couldn't keep up with these payments or payments for my DMP. I'm looking for any advice with how to deal with Jacobs, the letter they've sent is really threatening and I'd rather try and resolve the debt with the council instead of having to deal with Jacobs.

The letter you have had should be a Notice of Enforcement and this should have given you a date & time by which to contact them to either pay in full or make an arrangement to pay. If you have failed to engage with them then you are at risk of an enforcement visit - you get no warning of this. Imprisonment is a possibility for non-payment of Council Tax but you are a long way off this - whatever happens make sure you do not tell them you are refusing to pay. You can get on to your local Councillor(s) - details @ www.writetothem.com and ask they intervene on your behalf. You may still end up having to pay Jacobs but hopefully at a more affordable amount. At present they will be looking to have the whole debt paid off by the end of March but your Councillor may help extend this if need be.
