  • Nursery charges for not sending children during COVID-19

    Please help!

Our three year old son attends nursery for two and a half days a week. The funding for these days comes from the government. The new surge of COVID-19 cases in the new year, along with the lockdown in England, made us too worried to send him (if we became ill we have no support network to look after him). We wrote to the nursery on Sunday the 3rd of January saying we planned to keep him at home for one month until we felt the current lockdown had had some effect and he would be safe to return. On Friday 8th of January the nursery contacted us to say that as the nursery was open and we were choosing to keep our son at home we would be billed for the full costs of his non attendance monthly. This is almost £400 per month!

Surely we cannot be legally reasonable for such high cost for trying to protect our, and the general public’s health? It feels as if we are being published for making the choice to protect ourselves and our community.

If it's government funded did you contract any liability for payment.
If I were still a Head teacher I would respect parents right to decide without any pressure.
