Reclaim mortgage early repayment fees.

We sold our last property within 4 months of the completion of a 5 year fixed rate mortgage. The Bank refused to wave or negotiate the early repayment fees on the mortgage - which amounted to @ 8k. If we had made the remaining monthly payments & completed the 5 year period it would have cost £1400. The Bank would not discuss the matter. Can I reclaim the extortionate early repayment fees. I was in the process of downsizing so had to complete the property sale at the time. Thanks.
