  • Homeowner neighbour issues

I have an issue with the neighbour regarding the valley on her property in very poor state which has now caused part of her thatch to fall in and cause rain
coming through and running down my lounge walls. Firstly she said get a roofer and I will foot the bill. Now she says get in touch with insurance company. I did that and neither her or myself are covered as it is not due to storm. What to do now as I’ve got to have it repaired to stop the leak but I’m not responsible. I’m 83 and have no savings to pay for it.

If her property is causing damage to your property WRITE to her holding her responsible for the cost of repairing your property.
Say in the letter that if she does not pay you will initiate a court claim to recover your costs
In the letter tell her to pass it to her insurers and for her to make a claim under the liability section of her policy..

Her insurers will not be happy if she doesn't have a roof repaired and will probably "encourage" her.

Your local council Environmental Health Dept might be able to help if it is making your house damp, and possibly get Building Control involved?
