Hello
I am looking for help for a relative in his 80’s, a retired farmer living in a privately rented farmhouse on a regulated tenancy for life at a peppercorn rent.
The current landlords are a property company who purchased the property about 12 years ago. Unfortunately for them, my relative’s longevity is probably a disappointment to their investment plans!
The property needs certain repairs which they are reluctant to carry out despite protracted correspondence. They were sent a list of repairs - including a chimney in a dangerous condition - required with accompanying photographs in September.
We are aware via Shelter of the necessary procedures and are currently trying to contact the person responsible for private renting at the local council to date have not received a response.
My relatives main concern is that the landlords are attempting to run the property down by not carrying out any repairs in the hope that they can have the property condemned and get on with their investment plans.
This is, of course, an extremely stressful situation for an octogenarian and I will do whatever I can to help. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
