  • Council tax bill for deceased uncle's property.

My uncle passed away September 2019, he owned his own home had no spouse or children, next of kin is my mum and she has a younger brother who lives abroad. No Will was found, so I applied for probate for my mum, probate was granted to my mum and letters of admistration received in February. I have been getting the property ready for sale with help from siblings, mainly emptying belongings furniture, then everything stopped due to lockdown. 6 months since probate was granted council tax bill arrives in my name (nephew) I must have informed them of his his passing as with the other bills.

I'm a full time carer for my mum, she is in poor health so she unable to deal with the estate so I have to!

My mum gets pension credit, uncle is ex pat in USA, house is still late uncles name as things got left as is following probate due to covid and mum's health. Who pays the council tax?

Hi, Sorry to hear about your loss and I hope I can be a bit of help. The council tax bill will be paid from your late uncle’s estate which includes his bank accounts, house, chattels etc. If there is no access to cash from the estate at the moment, and you are waiting for the house sale- I would ring up the council and inform them of the current situation and what they advise you to do regarding payment.
