Finished a renovation project, we have paid 95% of the requested invoices, deapite the being higher than the original quote and without being presented with a bill of work.
We gave refused to pay the work for connecting a gas hob in an unsafe way, not according to gas safety standards, and for which we have paid now a gas technician to rectify.
We are disputing a surge in electrical costs, nearly x4 the originsl sum. We have already paid more than double the orogonal quote. We have requested a certificate of work to substantiate the costs, but the builder refuses to provide one.
We have refused to pay day 25 of painting, when at day 21 it was communicated that above 20 days of painting an empty 4 bed house is not acceptable.
We also have refused to pay additional costs that have suddenly appeared, such as £200 more for plumbing, again no breakdown of work has been provided and £200 to connect the washing machine (a service we could have got for free from the supplier).
May I add, an electrical inspection of the house revealed that the electrical work was most likely not conducted by an electrician, appliances had not been connected to the right breaker and rectified by the electrician whom we have paid for the work.
Also, the flooring on the ground floor has been laid on an unlevel surface, it needs to be removed, surface levelled with a screed and relaid. This is going to cost us £400-600.
The builder is not taking any responsibility for his work, is not willing to admit any of the faults is his responsibility. He's threatening to take us to court. I'm not deterred by this, and know our rights. It'll be good to get your view on this.
