Excess mileage

I have a debt company chasing me up for payment from my previous finance company for my last car. I have read that I legally do not need to pay this? Is this true?
I also got charged for damages but understandably need to pay for this. How do I go about telling the debt company that I’m not paying for the miles but will pay for the damage?
