How long does a Finance Company's claim last?

Hi all.* Last August I unwittingly bought a car from a private seller with outstanding finance on it.* In January of this year, the finance company write to me staking claim to the car.* I write to them immediately explaining that I believe I have good title to the vehicle and should be allowed to keep it.* I gave them all the information pertaining to the sale and the seller and expected to hear back from them.* But it is now 4 months later and I haven't heard a word.* So having replied and claimed "good title", do the finance company have an obligation to respond at all or within a timescale or does their claim remain indefinitely?* Or can I write to them again seeing a deadline for them to respond?* There is a matter of maintenance on the vehicle which of course I would like to keep up but obviously don't want to spend money if somebody is going to come and take the car away from me ... thanks in advance
