  • Golf club membership

Hi, before I start, apologies for this being in one paragraph, they’re appears to be a formatting issue on my phone. I’m new to the site and was hoping someone could help. I’m a member of a golf club which shut down due to Coronavirus. After a lot of back and forth the club have finally put an offer to members regarding ongoing payments. In short they have given members the option to keeping paying (until Aug when membership ends) and relieve 10% bar credit. Or cancel membership completely. However, I paid upfront in Aug 2019 and am being told that I cannot be refunded, which I’m confident goes against consumer law. They say that they won’t refund because it is an annual agreement, but they are letting monthly payers cancel - which is equal to refunding the total amount of an annual contract. My understanding is that they cannot charge me
for something that I cannot use, let alone treat me differently from monthly payers. Surely that is unfair, legally speaking? I’ve written to them detailing how I feel that this constitutes unfair terms on the grounds of a material change of services, a sharp increase in fees on a pro rate basis and unfair treatment - financially easing things for monthly payers, whilst ignoring up front payers. Normally, I would be open to negotiating but they are basically saying, “tough, we’re keeping your money without providing the service.” Also, they announced this plan to monthly payers today, just hours after taking April payments - not sure that’s fair either (even though it doesn’t effect me. It’s all very underhand and has caused me a lot of additional stress at a time that nobody needs it. Please help if you can. Thank you so much

Well, to be honest, what you wrote is not enough to figure out which one of you is right. I mean, you need to re-read the contract that you signed, because it might still be your fault, not the Golf clubs. Fortunately, I have never had such problems. I have always been friends with the Directors of Golf clubs because it was my father who brought me to this sport and introduced me to the owners of famous Golf clubs near our city. The only thing I would advise you to do is try to be as polite as possible. By the way, I found a nice source about golf and golf equipment windtreegolf.com.
