In 2015 I would regularly get tax credit letters saying we owed anything from 2-15 thousand pounds. I would always write back saying this was wrong, and I always ALWAYS updated them of any change in very good time. In 2012/13 we had an enquiry and had to send in copies of everything we possibly could, they called and said everything was ok, no problems so I was always surprised months/years later when they said we owed so much as the enquiry into that year was positive. We had a letter in the last 10 months when we came off tax credits and claimed universal credit that they owed us an underpayment of about £3500 - have sent 7 letters trying to get this and have never had a reply! Out of the blue two weeks ago had a letter saying we now owe about £4000 and they will make a direct attachment to my husbands earnings, and we received a copy of the letter they have sent to his work. We've disputed that we owe anything for years and years and hand on heart just cannot conceive of where they have this amount from. Can anyone help? Have sent yet another letter disputing but not hopeful. Just don't know how to navigate this. Can I send a letter to my husband's work saying the attachment is incorrect and should not be applied? We really can't afford any deductions and feel overwhelmed at the thought of paying back £4000 which we just can't see where it came from, they have never sent a breakdown despite us asking.

Hi
Really sorry to hear of this very stressful and inconsistent behaviour from HMRC. We have a lot of previous threads about this, well worth having a search of tax credit overpayment.

Have you appealed?
have you contacted your MP?
I don't think your employer have any choice in obeying the attachment of earnings, so unfortunately appealing will be necessary.
