Got a notice saying I had parked illegally, it was dark had not realised it was private car park. They asked for £100 or £60 if I paid straight away. I had been *away from home when letter arrived, so posted my cheque as soon as I could with four working days to spare, 1st class stamp and they say it arrived a day late. They eventually banked my cheque after several weeks, I spoke to them on the phone, I emailed them many times, I wrote a letter, posted it in same day of the week as before, 1st class stamp and it arrived the next day! *They have not acknowledged any of my emails or letter. They are still chasing me saying I now owe them £100 and threatening Court and debt collectors. The incident happened in October, they have no proof it arrived a day late. The letter I received yesterday says it was sent on 31st January, so it took a week to get here! What should I do?

Shame you paid them at all, dark, no signs visible, no contract, no money due.

A letter sent first class is assumed to be delivered 2 working days later.

Similarly their letter, if sent first class and it probably wasn't,* is deemed delivered 2 working days later so that is your reference date and not the date sent*

Looks like they've forgotten they've cashed a cheque.* I would be tempted to ignore and see where they go.

If you write to them again use first class mail and get a free certificate of posting from a post office*
