I've just had a letter from the Highways Agency asking me to cut back my conifer hedge, because it is obscuring their double sided HGV sign. Fair enough, the sign had almost disappeared inside the hedge, and I have cut back to, and a little beyond the boundary. However their post is within six inches of my fence, and the large illuminated oval, overhangs by about 40%. To make it slightly worse, my border is slightly dog-legged, meaning that the sign, from one direction, is half hidden behind a 45 degree corner. I think both the sign and I have been here for 20 years.*
Having cut back the hedge, I think that is probably the end of the matter. But I am curious as to whether I can be required to cut back on my own side of the fence, to give additional visibility to their road sign. If they get stroppy and require more cutting back, could I refuse and ask them to move their sign instead?
