  • council tax lump sum

Is there any law that compels me to pay my council tax by installments or in advance ? Can I simply pay the whole amount on March 31st (the end of the tax period) ? I'm just thinking why not keep it and earn 12 months interest and pay on the last day.

As I understand it the complete amount is legally due at the start of the year.* It is a concession that allows 2 payments per year or monthly.

Legally the payment is due on the issue of the council demand notice, with the concession to instalments as defined in statue. The same statue will withdraw the instalments if not paid. (Council Tax (Administration and Enforcement) Regulations 1992, as amended).

If you were to pay on 31 March then, unless the council are very, very slow, you'd have a court summons well before that point.

Over nearly 2 decades of working with council tax I've seen a reasonable few parties who have insisted, despite being told otherwise, that they could refuse to pay until 31 March. Without fail they all ended up with a court summons and a liability order well before the year was up.
