Do I have to pay for this?

My husband and I were looking to give a cat her forever home and posted a "cat wanted" ad online. A few days ago, I received a response from a woman who wants to rehome her two cats. She didn't expect any money for them, just a good home as she said.
I informed her that we only have one cat carrier. She offered to give us her pet carrier so that we have two to bring all cats home. My husband collected the cats from her. While waiting for the bus to come, one cat escaped from her carrier. It looked like the carrier was damaged so my husband decided to leave it at the bus stop next to the bin since it seemed not functional anymore.
We informed the woman about it and I apologised for it. Now she wants us to pay for a new cat carrier. Do we really have to pay for this?

If she gave it to you, it was yours to do with whatever you want.
If she only lent it , then you may have to give her the value of it.
As it was broken and not fit for purpose one must wonder what it is worth!

Has she said what she proposes to do if you do not replace it?
