  • Car Damaged, Perpetrator left name and mobile no only

I wonder if there is any way of tracking down this person? My car was parked as usual. On this occasion there was a note left on my windscreen stating the person has damaged my car and I should contact him. I contacted him via text and he appeared honest and helpful, even recommended his own garage. After I had been to the garage and and got a quote - over £500 to repair the damage, he stopped contacting me. Obviously he thought it would be a small job for under £100. I believe I know who the person is as I have asked around locally. However, without the registration number how much progress can I make if I wanted to claim on his insurance? The way things stand, my excess is over £500 so I dont want to approach my insurance company if it ends up that I have to pay for the damage plus my premium goes up!

Sometimes possible to trace a person from their mobile number.
Start by Googling the number.. then there are companies who may be able to trace them and then there is the police.
Essentially he has been involved in an accident and left the scene without leaving the relevant information... naughty boy.

PS altho' not your fault and you are not making a claim you are duty bound inform your insurers prior to next renewal

The police have been of no help whatsoever. I've tried googling the number but haven't found it yet. Perhaps when and if my insurers get involved, it will might be easier for them to track down this individual via his number. Is that my only option for now?

Trouble is your insurers will have no interest in spending money tracking down the third party.
You have a £500 xs so if they meet your claim the pay out will be less than the cost of trying to find the guilty party.

perhaps you should keep hassling the man in the hope he eventually comes across.
Can the garage help in identifying him?
If you are on FB or other social media ask publicly if anyone can identify the number (without saying why you want it)

I'm wondering what exactly is the point of having an insurance policy if they behave like this when one needs them.

How about a text from another phone.

"Hi (his name) I have found an envelope with your telephone number and name on it and it appears to have a letter in it (I have not opened it) can I send it to you?

This may elicit his address / work address.

When you purchase an insurance policy you pass your risk to the insurers.
They are then entitled to deal with any insured losses in the way they see fit, whilst indemnifying you for your loss.
In this case you have insured your losses in excess of £500. (you could possibly have chosen a lower excess and paid an increase premium to reflect the extra risk you were passing to the insurers)

If the repairs cost £600 they will pay you the £100 due.
It is possible they will not pursue the third party as the cost of tracing him and then (if successful) take action to recover their £100 could exceed the £100 they have paid out.
There is no reason why you don't continue trying to trace him to recover your £500.
